Ortiz, Jean finish in double-figures; slow third quarter alters otherwise positive performance from full-strength rotation
BUFFALO, N.Y. — Central Michigan Women's Basketball dropped the final road game of the 2023-24 season Wednesday night, 77-68, in Mid-American Conference play at Buffalo.
Tamara Ortiz (Columbus, Ohio / Westerville South) and Nadège Jean (Richton Park, Ill. / Rich South) led as double-digit scorers, 19 and 15 points, respectively. Jean collected a team-high 10 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season, and of her career.
Jean and Ortiz each hit double figures in a single quarter. The graduate forward posted 10 points on five-of-six in the paint in the first quarter while the freshman guard tallied 11 in the first six minutes of the second, scoring the first Chippewa points outside of the paint with her first three-pointer.
Central Michigan held a 32-29 lead with four minutes to play in the second quarter; the final lead change was recorded soon after. The Bulls, seeking to clinch the fifth seed at minimum in the upcoming league tournament, rattled off a 19-4 run in response to the Chippewa lead, spanning either side of intermission. The breakaway's momentum led to a 17-5 third quarter for Buffalo.
The Chippewas came back to life for a 28-point fourth quarter that featured a four-of-seven rate from three-point range and an eight-for-10 mark from the free throw line. Jean hit five straight free throws in the final four minutes after three misses through the first 36.
Central Michigan Women's Basketball will host Akron Saturday for Senior Day, as well as the 2023-24 season finale, at McGuirk Arena for a 1 p.m. ET tip-off.
