The six-foot-five center posted six blocks on Akron, Chippewas drop season finale 65-57
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — Making the most of her final opportunity, senior Rochelle Norris (Stafford, Va. / Hope Academy) rose up to tally six blocks Saturday against Akron, tied for sixth all-time in Central Michigan Women's Basketball history. The Chippewas celebrated Norris and graduate forward Nadège Jean (Richton Park, Ill. / Rich South) for Senior Day.
Norris finished the day as CMU's leader in scoring with 18 points—also a season high—on nine-of-14 from the field. Tamara Ortiz (Columbus, Ohio / Westerville South) improved her streak of double-digit scoring performances to four games with 12 points to end the year.
The Chippewas were faced with a 53-37 deficit early in the fourth quarter. Norris sparked a 10-0 run with back-to-back buckets, then kept the Zips at bay by logging her fifth and sixth blocks during the run. Ortiz and Alina Anderson (Rockford, Mich. / Rockford) to each hit a three-pointer to take advantage of Norris's stingy rim protection and bring CMU back to a two-possession game with four minutes to go.
Despite seven rebounds from Madisen Wardell (Detroit / Edison PSA) off the bench, Central Michigan was outrebounded by Akron, 38-29—only the second time the Chippewas were outrebounded in the final 13 games of the season.
The 2023-24 Central Michigan Women's Basketball season concluded with the Akron contest, finishing the season 6-22 (4-14 MAC).
