DeBARY, Fla. – Rachel Kauflin finished fifth and Ashley Goh tied for 10th as the Central Michigan women's golf team wrapped up the Babs Steffens Invitational at DeBary Golf and Country Club on Tuesday.
Kauflin, a senior who entered the final round of the 54-hole event with a one-shot lead, posted a 9-over 81 on Tuesday to finish with a 228 total. Her T5 ties for her best finish of the season and it marks the second best finish of her career.
Goh, also a senior, shot a 1-over 73 to tie for the second best round of the day in the 53-player field. She finished with a 231 total to tie for 10th.
It marks the sixth top 10 finish in nine events this season for Goh and a program record 15th of her career.
"Ash played well today," CMU coach Ryan Williams said. "She's been struggling a little bit lately so it was good to see her have a good round. She made a few birdies, got some things going and it was good to see that; it kind of reminds herself of how well she can play.
"Rachel struggled. She made some bogeys; it's a tough golf course and it was windy again and those things happen. She hung in there and battled really hard. Getting a top five is really solid for her. Really couldn't ask for anything more out of Rachel and Ashley this week. They anchored us for sure."
The Chippewas posted a 312 team score on Tuesday, their best of the three rounds in the tournament. They finished with a 949 total to place seventh.
"It was good in today's round to see a little bit of a bounce-back from the team," Williams said. "They definitely played a lot more steady and they battled and grinded. It's a reminder of what that's like, what they're capable of, what they can do. I was happy to see that. We're motivated on our way back up north and ready to get to work."
Host Stetson shot 302 on Tuesday to win the tournament with a 914 total, seven shots ahead of runner-up Seminole State.
CMU's Lexi Schulman and Rachel Niskanen both carded a 79 on Tuesday. Schulman, who opened the tournament on Monday with a 78, finished with a 241 total and T27, while Niskanen finished at 249 for a T37. The 79 was Niskanen's best round of the tournament.
The 241 total tied Schulman's career best for 54 holes.
"They're getting really valuable experience in their freshman year, which is great," Williams said of Schulman and Niskanen. "They're showing some things. I'll think they'll gain some confidence from this and hopefully continue to get better as they go forward.
"They both made a couple of birdies and showed they can be opportunistic and take advantage of their chances and that's all I ask of them. They had really good attitudes all day and that's kind of what it takes to finish some rounds off and that's always good to see."
Casey Powell of Jacksonville, who trailed Kauflin by one shot entering Tuesday's final round, shot 1-over 73 to finish with a 221 total and capture medalist honors.
The Chippewas are scheduled to play in the Dolores Black Invitational in Bowling Green, Ohio, on April 6-7. The Mid-American Conference Championship is scheduled for April 21-23 at Pinnacle Golf Club in Grove City, Ohio.
