Martel named MAC Defensive Player of the Week

The junior goalie posted 17 saves against No. 19 Colorado on Thursday, eight more against reigning national champion No. 3 Northwestern Sunday
CLEVELAND — Junior Alexa Martel (Rochester, N.Y. / Greece Olympia) of Central Michigan Lacrosse was named Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Week the league office announced Tuesday afternoon.
CMU's everyday goalkeeper tallied 17 saves against No. 19 Colorado last Thursday, one shy of her program record (18) set at Duquesne nearly a year ago to the date (March 7, 2023). Martel has posted 16 or more saves four times in her career, all top-ten performances in program history.
Martel then posted eight saves against reigning national champion No. 3 Northwestern on Sunday, six of which came in the first quarter of the contest.
The junior is the eighth player in program history to earn the conference's weekly recognition three-plus times in her career, just the third to do so with the defensive distinction, earning the honor twice last season.
Skye DePrado (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Allegheny) was the first Chippewa to earn weekly laurels this season after dumping in six goals on Butler in the season opener.
