Another great effort from Martel nets 12 saves, Chippewas allow just one second-half goal to sixth-ranked Wolverines
ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Central Michigan Lacrosse settled in to stand toe-to-toe with No. 6 Michigan Saturday afternoon, outscoring the Wolverines, 2-1, over the second half. The Chippewas dropped the last of its three-game gauntlet of nationally ranked opponents, 11-3.
Reigning Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Week Alexa Martel (Rochester, N.Y. / Greece Olympia) posted 12 saves in the contest, five of which came in the third quarter as the Chippewa defense stalled the Wolverines' attack. The junior goalie stands at 294 career saves, poised to become the program's second to reach the 300-mark in its ninth season. The next step: to catch the program record set by Dominique Hamman in 2019 (423).
The defensive effort took another step forward in the fourth, allowing just one attempt on cage, forcing six Michigan turnovers using six different CMU players. Jozy Allen (Cincinnati, Ohio / Sycamore) led the group with a pair of caused turnovers for the game; Martel managed to also be one of the six Chippewas to get into the category in the fourth.
Sadie Hinkle (Medina, Ohio / Medina) improved to eight goals on the season, scoring in the first and third quarters to break up Michigan's 6-0 run to open the game and the 4-0 run heading into the half. Skye DePrado (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Allegheny) brought her team-leading mark up to 13 with the final goal of the contest with 13:46 to go.
Central Michigan Lacrosse returns to Mount Pleasant Friday to host Lindenwood (March 15, 2 p.m.), followed by the opening of league play the following Sunday against Detroit Mercy (March 17, Noon). Sunday's bout with the Titans has been dubbed the annual Morgan's Message tribute game, in support of the organization's charge to raise awareness of mental illness.
