Chippewas hit six homers on the day, two each by Stuart and Morgan

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Central Michigan could not overcome early deficits on Saturday in dropping a Mid-American Conference doubleheader to Bowling Green, 10-8, 10-7, at the Falcons' Steller Field.

The Chippewas and Falcons play the third and final came of the series on Sunday (1 p.m.). First-place Bowling Green improved to 14-0 in MAC play.

The Chippewas trailed 5-1 after three innings in the opener and eventually crept within 8-7 after six. But the Falcons scored twice in the seventh to keep CMU at bay.

In the nightcap, Bowling Green seized a 4-1 lead on a first-inning grand slam and its lead expanded to 6-1 after two innings.

Again, the Chippewas hung in, drawing to 7-5 heading into the bottom of the fifth. But Bowling Green scored twice in the fifth and tacked on a run in the sixth to keep CMU at arm's length.

The Chippewas hit six home runs on the day, four in the opener. CMU had just one multi-homer game this season before Saturday's twinbill.

Ely Stuart hit a three-run homer in the opener and a two-run shot in the nightcap and finished with a combined seven RBI on the day to lead the Chippewas at the plate. Stuart leads the Chippewas with five homers this season.

Robby Morgan IV, who missed the previous 17 games with an injury, hit a pinch-hit homer in game 1 and homered again in game 2. Morgan had not played since March 8 and he has four homers on the season.

Cole Prout and Marquis Jackson also homered in the opener for the Chippewas. It was Jackson's second straight game with a home run and his fourth of the season. Prout's homer was his first of the year.

Adam Mrakitsch (2-5) started and took the loss in game 1. He allowed five runs on five hits, walked four and struck out three over 2 2/3 innings. Bryce Hellgeth and Jared Hanson pitched in relief.

Ben Vitas (1-4) started and took the loss in the nightcap. He surrendered six runs on six hits, walked one and struck out one over two frames. Jack Bach, Quin Konuszewski and Jonah Milchuck pitched in relief.
