CMU took out Eastern Michigan to take sole possession of the league’s top spot with two games left in the 2024 regular season; Martel with 14-save gem, DePrado, Edwards continue offensive fireworks
YPSILANTI, Mich. — Central Michigan Lacrosse took Scicluna Field by storm Sunday morning with a dominant, 16-7, performance at Eastern Michigan in a battle of Mid-American Conference rivals, undefeated in league play.
CMU took control of the MAC regular season standings with Sunday's victory as the two programs entered the day at 3-0 in league play, with a 1.5-game lead over a three-way tie for third in the conference. The league's championship tournament (May 2-4) will be hosted by its regular season title holder.
The Chippewa attack clicked early and often as Skye DePrado (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Allegheny) and Sandy Edwards (Stuart, Fla. / Jensen Beach) each found a hat trick in the contest. DePrado, Sadie Hinkle (Medina, Ohio / Medina) and Natalie DiSanto (Waterloo, N.Y. / Waterloo) each had a pair in the first, leading to a 10-3 lead at the break.
Alexa Martel (Rochester, N.Y. / Greece Olympia) was as sturdy as ever in goal with 14 saves toward her NCAA I-leading tally this season (167), needing just nine over the next two games to break her own single-season record set last season. The junior tallied eight saves in the second half as the Chippewas aimed to close out their crucial MAC win.
CMU scored four straight goals in the first quarter after the Eagles drew first blood in the opening minutes. The run ballooned to a 7-1 onslaught near the midway point of the second quarter. Four different players contributed to the burst in first quarter, all of whom ended the game with at least two goals: DePrado, DiSanto, Hinkle and Reagan Martinsen (Long Beach, N.Y. / Long Beach).
Martinsen's day on the offensive end was perhaps overshadowed by her defensive statistics as she led the Chippewas with a career-high four caused turnovers. Combined with three in the category from Martel, CMU posted its third-best game in program history with 16 caused turnovers overall. Martinsen and Martel shared the team lead of five ground balls as well, also a career high for Martinsen.
Central Michigan Lacrosse returns to Mount Pleasant next Sunday (April 21) to host Akron for Senior Day, with a chance to clinch the 2024 Mid-American Conference regular season championship, and the right to host the MAC tournament (May 2-4). The 2024 regular season concludes with a trip to Kent State (April 27).
