A 16-save gem against Akron Sunday reset the program’s single-season saves record for the junior goalie, Chippewas remain undefeated in MAC play
CLEVELAND — Junior Alexa Martel (Rochester, N.Y. / Greece Olympia) was named the Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the third consecutive week, and fifth time in 2024, the league office announced Tuesday afternoon.
Â
The Chippewas clinched a share of the MAC regular season title, and host duties for the 2024 MAC Championship tournament (May 2-4) with an 11-7 victory over Akron Sunday, in which Martel posted 16 saves to eclipse her own program record for single-season saves.
Â
Martel stands as the NCAA I leader in total saves (183) this season, surpassing her own program record for saves in a single season (183), set last season. She has also extended her Central Michigan record outright for most Player of the Week distinctions at the conference level with her seventh career selection Tuesday.
Â
The junior goalie's seven career selections overtake Jackie Wolford of Kent State and Jamie Keller of Robert Morris for the most Player of the Week selections nearing the end of the fourth year of MAC Women's Lacrosse. Martel and Keller remain tied at six outright selections each, as Martel's nod on April 9 of this season was a split selection. Martel is also the conference record holder for most selections in a single season (5).
Â
Central Michigan has had seven appearances in the MAC Player of the Week listing this season. Skye DePrado (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Allegheny) earned the week one nod after dumping in six goals in the season-opener at Butler, then again last week after posting four goals at Eastern Michigan to put the Chippewas in the driver's seat for the regular season conference title.
Â
Central Michigan Lacrosse visits Kent State Saturday (April 27; 1 p.m.) to round out the 2024 regular season, then will host the league's No. 4 seed on Thursday, May 2 to open the 2024 Mid-American Conference Championship tournament at the CMU Lacrosse Complex.
