Four goals each from Hinkle, DePrado, 13 saves from Martel lead to strong all-around performance in rematch of 2022, 2023 MAC title games
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — Central Michigan Lacrosse took down Robert Morris, 13-6, at the CMU Lacrosse Complex Sunday afternoon.
"I think any time us and Robert Morris get together, it's going to be a fight," Head Coach Emilia Ward said. "We knew this game was really important for us to get ourselves to 3-0 in the conference and be in the driver' seat as we go to the home stretch."
The Chippewas responded to an early score from the Colonials with a 3-0 run, then put the game away with a 4-0 run that spanned either side of the halftime break for a 9-3 lead with still over 10 minutes to play in the third quarter. CMU held a lead of at least two goals for the final 38 minutes of the contest.
"It was our best 60-minute effort [of the season], and one of our defense's best games," Ward said. "We just really cleaned things up there today and kept it simple. Offensively, we got so many quality looks, and the majority of them were in the heart of the eight-meter."
Central Michigan's defense allowed just five attempts on-goal in the first half, preserving junior goalie Alexa Martel (Rochester, N.Y. / Greece Olympia) to step up for 11 of her 13 saves in the second half while the Chippewas broke away. Led by three forced takeaways from Jozy Allen (Cincinnati, Ohio / Sycamore) the CMU back line collected five of its eight caused turnovers for the contest in the first half, for seven of the Colonials' 13 turnovers for the game.
"[Robert Morris is] a team all season long that's come back on teams in either the third or fourth quarter, so we made an emphasis at halftime of not taking our foot off the pedal but also being really smart, and just keeping it simple." Ward said. "Starting the quarter with a 3-0 run with a man-up goal right out of the gate definitely helped keep the momentum going."
On top of many point-blank opportunities for the offense in live play, the Chippewas converted all four of their free-position opportunities taken on the day, two of which came in the first quarter. Skye DePrado (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Allegheny) and Sadie Hinkle (Medina, Ohio / Medina) each tallied one on their way to respective four-goal efforts. DePrado finished the day with a fifth point, assisting the first goal of the second half.
Since returning from injury three games ago, DePrado has scored 10 goals through hat tricks at Youngstown State (March 31) and at Pittsburgh (April 2) ahead of Sunday's four-spot, extending her team-high mark to 27 goals this season. Including her four-goal contest against Lindenwood (March 15), DePrado has scored 14 goals across her last four appearances.
Hinkle matched her career-high of four goals for the first time this season as her hat trick from Youngstown State had marked her season-high to this point. Sunday's performance marked her sixth multi-goal output for the season.
After a hiccup on its first attempt, CMU logged 20 straight successful clear attempts from the 11-minute mark of the first quarter to the game's conclusion, forcing three turnovers from Robert Morris in the same category.
All eyes around the Mid-American Conference will shift to an undefeated showdown between in-state rivals as CMU heads to Ypsilanti next Sunday Eastern Michigan (6-5; 3-0 MAC). For the Chippewas, the mindset remains the same.
"The reality is, every single game counts as one win or one loss," Ward said. "Early in the week, a lot of the focus will be on recovery from this game and just getting ourselves feeling really good then later on in the week the emphasis will be on things that we need to do to be effective against Eastern."
The Chippewas and Eagles have marched out to undefeated starts in league play through the halfway mark of the conference schedule, while Kent State, Robert Morris and Detroit Mercy all sit in a tie for third at 2-2 in MAC play.
Central Michigan Lacrosse is slated for a 10:30 a.m. first draw at Eastern Michigan Sunday (April 14), then return for the regular-season home finale April 21 against Akron for Senior Day. The 2024 Mid-American Conference tournament begins May 2, hosted by the regular season champion.
