Vitas goes the distance for his MAC-leading third complete game of the season
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – In a tight game, little things made all the difference.
Western Michigan scored all three of its runs in the fifth inning on Thursday in taking a 3-2 victory from Central Michigan in a three-game Mid-American Conference series on Keilitz Field at Theunissen Stadium.
The Chippewas and Broncos play game 2 of their series on Friday (1 p.m.). CMU will recognize 17 graduating seniors before the game in a ceremony scheduled to begin at 12:15 p.m.
Western Michigan got a double and RBI single in seizing a 1-0 lead on Thursday in the fifth inning. The Broncos, who are looking to wrap up the No. 2 seed in next weekend's MAC Tournament, then used a bunt, a walk, a passed ball, and another RBI double to up their lead to 3-0.
CMU got one back in the bottom of the fifth on Elijah Henning's RBI groundout, and then pulled to 3-2 with a run in the sixth on a Cole Prout RBI single.
The Chippewas, who matched the Broncos with nine hits, put at least one baserunner on in each of their final three times at bat, but couldn't get the equalizer against two Western relievers.
Ben Vitas (2-7) threw his third complete game of the season for the Chippewas in taking the loss. He struck out three and walked two.
With three complete games this season, Vitas leads the MAC and is among the top 10 in the nation in that category.
Marquis Jackson and Danny Wuestenfeld had two hits apiece and Jacob Donahue doubled for the Chippewas, who stranded 10 baserunners.
Jackson extended his hit streak to seven games and his on-base streak to 19.
