MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Former Central Michigan pitcher Adam Mrakitsch has signed a free agent contract with the Texas Rangers.
Mrakitsch, a 6-foot-1, 175-pound left-hander, was not selected during Major League Baseball's annual draft, which concluded on Tuesday. He signed with the Rangers on Wednesday and is set to report soon to the team's training facility in Surprise, Ariz.
Mrakitsch played three seasons with CMU, going 17-10 with a 3.48 earned run average. He appeared in 41 games, 29 of them starts. He struck out 188 against 73 walks in 188 2/3 career innings.
Mrakitsch emerged a key member of the Chippewas' starting rotation as a freshman in 2022 when he went 7-1 with a 2.34 ERA and won two games in the Mid-American Conference Tournament as the Chippewas claimed the title. He also was the winning pitcher in CMU's 3-2 12-inning victory over Liberty in the NCAA Regional in Gainesville, Fla.
In 2023 as a sophomore, Mrakitsch went 8-4 with a 3.59 ERA as he earned First Team All-MAC honors and a spot on the MAC All-Defensive Team.
His final season at CMU, 2024, was cut short by injury after he began the year as D1Baseball.com's Preseason MAC Pitcher of the Year and one of the league's top 12 draft prospects.
Mrakitsch had the option to play one more season of college baseball but accepted the Rangers' offer.
"It was the right situation," Mrakitsch said. "I've talked with my family, weighed the pros and cons of going to pro ball or going back for another year of school and we came up with a list and if a team was able to meet those needs – and the Rangers were able to – we felt that was the right decision and the right move moving forward for my career.
"It's been nothing short of amazing," Mrakitsch said of his three years at CMU. "I'm very grateful for the opportunity to play college ball at Central Michigan and the relationships it's given me through various coaches, my roommates and my friends on the team. The relationships and connections I've built there and the experiences I was able to share, I wouldn't trade those for anything."
