MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich.—Central Michigan offensive lineman Dominic Serapiglia III has been nominated for two of college football's most prestigious national community service awards including the AFCA Good Works Team and Wuerffel Trophy. He is among a long list of college football players at the FBS, FCS, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, and NAIA levels nominated for the AFCA Good Works Team and Wuerffel Trophy.
A 6-foot-1, 325-pounder from Jefferson Hills, Pa. who attended Thomas Jefferson High School, Serapiglia started at center in all 12 of CMU's games in 2023. He is a preseason All-MAC selection who earned Third Team All-MAC honors from Phil Steele Magazine and previously was named to the All-Southland Conference Second Team in 2022 at Southeastern Louisiana. He enters the 2024 season after having started 12 consecutive games on an offensive line that yielded just 26 sacks in 2023. In his four-year career, he has seen action in 38 games at Central Michigan, Southeastern Louisiana, and Tulsa.
A redshirt senior, Serapiglia has already earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Supply Chain Management and is now pursuing a Master of Business Administration at Central Michigan. He sports a 3.8 grade point average and has earned various Academic Honor Roll honors.
On the community service front, Serapiglia has organized the CMU Bubz Pancake Challenge, a fundraiser created this fall which will raise funds for the athletes of the Special Olympics. Fans have the opportunity to pledge a dollar amount per pancake block throughout the upcoming 2024 football season. More information on this initiative can be found at this link.
In addition, Serapiglia has involved in a variety of community service activities through the years including with the Michigan Special Olympics, Earth Day, Camp for the Stars at the Pennsylvania Big 33 All-Star Game, Pittsburgh VA Hospital, and hurricane cleanup after Hurricane Ida in Louisiana. He also organized the Bubz Polar Plunge at CMU.
Established in 1992, the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team is one of the most coveted community service awards in college football. To be considered for a spot on the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, each player must be actively involved with a charitable organization or service group while maintaining strong academic standing.
College Football's Premier Award for Community Service, and one of the most meaningful awards in collegiate sports, The Wuerffel Trophy is named after Danny Wuerffel, the 1996 Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback from the University of Florida who parlayed his success on the football field into a lifetime of service. The Wuerffel Trophy embodies Danny's commitment to being a humanitarian, while honoring student-athletes who are inspired to serve others and make positive impacts on society.
Established in 2005, the Wuerffel Trophy honors college football players who serve others, celebrates their impact, and inspires greater service across the nation. A member of the National College Football Awards Association, the Wuerffel Trophy is presented annually to the FBS player who best combines exemplary community service with leadership achievement on and off the field. It is the first major award honoring the character of service to others.
