Central Michigan Volleyball defeated Southeastern Missouri State in their night game on Saturday to advance to 7-1 on the season.
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — A split on Friday for Central Michigan brings them to a 7-1 start for the 2024 season. The Chippewas fell to Eastern Kentucky in a five-set thriller to open their stretch in the tournament. The nightcap, however, was a win for CMU over SEMO (3-1). Central Michigan hit .258 on their way to a victory over the RedHawks as they closed out the first day of the invitational.
In the first game, CMU dropped the first set to the Colonels to mark their first loss in the first set in the 2024 season. After falling 27-29 to EKU, CMU rebounded to win set two to win 25-21 before dropping set three, 23-25 and then collecting the victory 25-23 in set four. The Chippewas dropped set five to EKU, 15-11 to ultimately drop the match.
Krystina Kasson led the Chippewas with 18 kills (.421) and three block assists. Natalia Rejment and Hannah Langton totaled 48 digs (23 and 25 respectively). Abby Olin continued her defensive clinic as she charted eight total blocks, two solo and six block assists. Olin contributed on the offensive end with nine kills of her own as well.
"This morning, we left a match out there (vs. EKU)" said Chippewa head coach Mike Gawlik. "we didn't play great this morning, but the second game was there for the taking. We talked after the first match and said that we were going to be defined by how we bounce back than how we did this morning.", and CMU just did that.
Game two of the night was the energy in McGuirk for the day as CMU took down SEMO in four sets (25-19, 23-25, 25-18, 25-16). Central Michigan outscored SEMO 74-53 on the night, charting 62 kills compared to the RedHawks' 41. The points for the Chippewas were led by junior outside hitter, Maddy Gebhardt, who charted a season high 17 (.286).
The offense was firing on all cylinders for CMU, hitting .258 as a team. On the defensive end, CMU charted 12 total blocks, with Grace Thomas and Abby Olin both recording solo stuffs. 70 digs for CMU were achieved with three Chippewas hitting double digits. Allie Korba (11), Natalia Rejment (15), and freshman Hannah Langton (18).
The Chippewas use a phrase that "fatigue is physiological, but tired is mental. We say that we can't be tired even though we are fatigued." and CMU showed their ability to not be tired and rebound grabbing that win over SEMO.
Central Michigan played significantly "cleaner" volleyball in their second game against the RedHawks. In the first game on Friday, CMU charted 37 attack errors over five sets. Against SEMO, CMU charted just 23 attack errors in four sets, however, 16 of those 23 were in set two, the set they dropped in the match. "…that is an incredible difference." said Gawlik, "…we were kind of swinging away for the fences this morning, so I liked our adjustment in this second game…I think we were more responsible with the volleyball in the night game and were much more "volleyball mature."
Central Michigan closes out the tournament on Saturday when they take on Green Bay at 3:30 p.m. celebrating Parent Appreciation Day in McGuirk Arena.
