Natalie Newcombe & Emily Paupore set indoor mile, indoor 3000m program records; McLean moves upward in shot put list
SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Central Michigan Track and Field just keeps on making history.
Natalie Newcombe became the women's indoor mile recordholder and Emily Paupore refreshed her record 3000m time on Saturday to wrap up Notre Dame's Meyo Invitational at the Loftus Sports Center.
Newcome, a senior, placed 6th in the women's open mile with a time of 4:45.16, besting her previous personal record of 4:51.40. She moved up from 5th all-time in the record books, surpassing Paupore's then-record holding time. Newcombe is currently ranked 2nd in the Mid-American Conference in the indoor mile.
Paupore, also in her final season, initially set the indoor 3000m record on Feb. 9, 2024 at Boston University's David Hemery Valentine Invitational. She placed 2nd on Saturday in the invitational race, comprised of competition from Notre Dame, Michigan State and Wisconsin among others.
The Negaunee, Mich. senior is currently ranked 26th in the nation in the indoor 3000m and leads the Mid-American Conference in the event.
Newcombe and Paupore's feats were not the only highlights for the Chippewa squad, who saw ten personal-bests on the weekend among other accomplishments.
On Friday, senior thrower Emily McLean (currently 10th on CMU indoor shot put list) threw a personal-best 14.18m, inching closer to moving up the list.
Sprinter Kaitlynn Rush qualified for the 60m semifinals and raced her way to the finals on Saturday, where she finished 7th overall with a time of 7.73.
"We had people making finals for events which is always great," said Director of Cross/Country Track and Field Jenny Swieton. "Two school records and an all-time top 10 performance was the icing on the cake.
"I can't say enough about what Emily (McLean) Emily (Paupore) and Natalie have done for this team."
Junior Kate Jenkins got CMU moving bright and early on Saturday, placing 21st as the lone Chippewa runner in the women's open 3000m.
In the 800m open, Chesney Wilke ran a season-best 2:14.09 followed by freshman Lois Creasey (29th) and Libby Munderloh (35th). Munderloh competed in the 600m on Friday.
Sophomore Robyn Watts ran a season-best 59.50 in the 400m open to finish 20th.
Following Newcombe in the open mile were freshman Olivia East (40th) and sophomore Emma Janesak (44th). It was a personal best for Janesak in the event.
"It was a great weekend for us," Swieton said. "We had some freshmen get their first experience at a high-level meet and hold their own. We also had so many sophomores step up and have great performances.
"It is so fun to watch it click for them. Our upperclassmen really showed up and got it done too; it is so fun to watch the growth of the team and it's great that our younger student-athletes have such great examples in the classes above them."
The Chippewas look onward to their second home indoor meet of the season, the Chippewa Invitational, on Feb. 8 at the Jack Skoog Indoor Track. The event, located inside the Indoor Athletic Complex, is cash only for spectators.
