Chippewas take two of three from Bobcats for their first series victory of the season

ATHENS, Ohio – Ohio exploded for seven runs on six hits in the seventh inning on Saturday in handing Central Michigan a 15-12 loss in the finale of a three-game Mid-American Conference baseball series at the Bobcats' Bob Wren Stadium.

The Chippewas took the first two games of the series on Friday to win their first series of the season.

CMU, which saw its win streak end at three games, is 5-15, 2-1 MAC. The Chippewas entertain Cleary in a nonconference game on Wednesday, March 19 (3 p.m.) in their home opener on Keilitz Field at Theunissen Stadium.

The Chippewas collected 16 hits – the third time in four games that they have reached double digits in hits – on Saturday and built a 10-2 lead through 2 ½ innings.

The Bobcats chipped away with three runs in the bottom of the third, two in the fourth and one in the sixth before their big seventh inning.

Five Chippewas finished with multiple hits, led by freshman Cayden Smith who had four including three doubles and he drove in three runs.

Cole Prout had three hits, while Mikey Murphy, Aaron Piasecki and Aydin Wright had two each. Wright finished with three RBI while Murphy had two.

Max Hammond (0-2), the third Chippewa pitcher, took the loss.

A.J. Kostic started for CMU and went three innings before giving way to Jake Brown, who also went three.

CMU led, 12-8, entering the bottom of the seventh. Ohio got a leadoff home run to cut it to 12-9, and then pieced together three straight singles to draw to 12-10.

Hammond relieved Brown and then surrendered an RBI groundout and a sacrifice fly to tie the game, 12-12. After a walk and a single, Ohio's Nick Dolan homered to put the Bobcats in front.
