Kahler tallies 13 saves in first career start, Chippewas rally from three-goal deficit in fourth quarter to force overtime
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — Central Michigan Lacrosse wound up with a unique box score in Sunday's overtime loss to Kent State, 10-9, to open Mid-American Conference play at the CMU Lacrosse Complex.
The Chippewas went to overtime in a regular-season MAC game for the first time ever, and just the second as a member of any conference (vs. Old Dominion, 2017). The extra period also marked the first time the program has had two overtime games in the same season, the other just last week at Niagara.
Junior Leila Kahler (Spring Lake, Mich. / Spring Lake) received the nod in cage for her first career start just minutes before the first draw and more-than doubled her career total with 13 saves—she had just 12 in her six prior career appearances.
Kahler tallied seven saves in the second half at points where CMU either trailed or was tied with the Golden Flashes, with a critical free-position save with 71 seconds left in the contest to set up the Chippewas' tying goal on the next possession. She held Kent State to one goal from the eight-meter in four attempts.
Senior defender Jozy Allen (Cincinnati, Ohio / Sycamore) scored from one of her 11 draw controls with six minutes to play as the second of a three-goal rally in the fourth quarter to force overtime.
Allen's 11 draw controls marked back-to-back games in double digits as she tied the program record with 15 in the victory at Canisius on Wednesday; prior to that, her career best effort was nine. Her goal Sunday is the second of her career, as she scored at Youngstown State last season.
Seven Chippewas found the back of the net Sunday, Celia Dow (Penfield, N.Y. / Penfield) and Skye DePrado (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Allegheny) each had a pair. Both players scored in the three-goal comeback in the fourth, DePrado's tying the game with 24 seconds left.
Dow led the way with four points featuring two key assists: DePrado's game-tying strike and the first career goal for freshman Julia Werner (Gurnee, Ill. / Warren Township).
DePrado continued her scorched-earth return to the lineup as her 11 goals on the season have come in the last four games, eight of which were logged in the two-game spring break trip to New York.
Ava Regitz (Marietta, Ga. / Blessed Trinity) matched her career high with four caused turnovers, three of which came in a three-minute window on either side of the quarter break between the third and fourth. Regitz set her career mark in CMU's last home game against Cincinnati (March 2).
Central Michigan Lacrosse heads out on the road to face Akron next Sunday, another Noon ET start, kicking off alternating weeks of home and road games through the remainder of the conference slate.
