Track and Field Excels at GVSU Extra Weekend Meet; Wilke into 800m Record Books

16 Chippewas Achieve Personal-Bests, Wilke Runs 9th-Fastest 800m
ALLENDALE, Mich. — Chesney Wilke ran her way into the Central Michigan Outdoor Track & Field record books on Saturday at the GVSU Extra Weekend Meet, where she, alongside 16 of her teammates, achieved personal-bests.
Wilke placed 2nd in the 800m invitational in Allendale with a time of 2:11.30, good for ninth all-time in the Chippewa record books.
Freshman Lois Creasey finished fourth, a personal best, alongside Libby Munderloh in 18th.
Two other CMU runners posted updates to their placed times in the record books, but remained in their respective positions in the top 10.
Natalie Newcombe ran a personal-best 4:24.76 in the 1500m invitational on Saturday. The Mecosta, Mich. senior stands third in the record book for the outdoor 1500m, having shaved two seconds off her previous best time.
Alongside Newcombe in the 1500m invitational were Jessie Gibbins (16th), Kate Jenkins (19th, PR), Nikki Carothers (27th), Olivia East (31st), Mara Szuper (35th, PR), Ambria Nagel (37th) and Lauren Hasty (39th).
Emma Janesak was the lone representee for CMU in the steeplechase, placing 3rd with a time of 10:49.29. The sophomore is eighth in Chippewa history in the event, having first inked her name in the spot on April 4.
Emma Netzel, Miranda McNeil, Logan Brazee and Elle Himebaugh ran the 5000m open. Netzel finished 12th in 17:34.26, followed by McNeil in 20th, Brazee in 22nd and Himebaugh in 28th, all having ran personal-best times.
Freshman hurdlers Ciara Rosenzweig and Jada Pride finished 1st and 2nd in the 100mH, respectively, with times of 15.75 and 16.20.
Pride finished 10th in the 400mH, alongside Munderloh, who ran a personal-best 1:02.90 to place 3rd.
Mireya Benjamin, Dior Newson and Sky Austin ran the 100m and 200m for CMU, alongside teammates Danica Shamion, Rosenzweig and Grace Williamson in the 200m.
Benjamin finished 2nd in the 100m, followed by Newson in 4th and Austin in 6th. Newson led the Chippewas in the 200m, finishing 3rd in 25.19. Benjamin finished 4th and Austin 7th. Shamion placed 8th, followed by Rosenzweig in 15th and Williamson in 21st, both attaining personal-bests.
Shamion, a freshman, led CMU in the 400m, finishing 3rd in 58.35. Robyn Watts ran a personal-best 58.38 to finish 4th, followed by Grace Jenkins in 5th. Nicole Olivieri finished 16th.
Freshman jumper Hailey Hill leaped a personal-best 5.37m in the long jump, good for a 7th-place finish.
CMU men's cross country additionally competed in the 1500m open, 1500m invitational and 5,000m open events.
Steven Porter finished 14th in the open 1500m, while Carson White and Andrew Floros finished 26th and 34th, respectively, in the invite.
Ethan Leitner led the Chippewas in the 5000m, finishing 19th in a personal-best 14:33.83. Miciah Smith finished 44th, Nick Cockerel 51st and Greg Janesak 58th.
The Chippewas have two more action-packed weekends on the schedule before Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships on May 15-17. CMU will head to Ohio State's Jesse Owens Classic on May 2-3 and Duke's 'Duke Twilight' meet on May 4. Michigan's Len Paddock Invitational will round out the regular season on May 9.
