
Paupore, Newcombe set for NCAA East Preliminaries in Jacksonville

Paupore to run 3000S as 6th-ranked in Region; Newcombe to run 5000m as first-time goer
INDIANAPOLIS — Central Michigan's Emily Paupore and Natalie Newcombe have each punched their ticket to the 2025 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field East Region preliminaries in Jacksonville, Fla., as announced by the NCAA on Thursday.
The NCAA East Region preliminaries in Jacksonville will take place from May 28-31 at the University of North Florida. Paupore will run in the 3000S on Saturday, May 31 at 5:40 p.m. ET. Newcombe, also running on Saturday, will compete in the 5000m at 8:10 p.m.
Paupore, a senior hailing from Negaunee, Mich., will make her second career appearance at the regional, having gone for the steeplechase alongside Anya Turner in 2023. She ran the Mid-American Conference Championship record in the event to bring home the gold on May 16, winning the race in 9:57.18. Paupore maintains a personal-best, CMU record-holding time of 9:56.45, which ranks her first in the league, sixth in the region and 16th in the nation. The decorated runner brought home an additional MAC title in the 5000m on May 17.
Newcombe, a walk-on local to Mecosta, Mich., is a first-time competitor at the NCAA preliminaries. The senior enters ranked 44th in the region and third in the MAC, having ran a personal-best time of 16:03.15 at Duke Twilight on May 4. Her time stands third all-time in the CMU record books behind Paupore and Chris Cooper (1987). Newcombe competed in the 1500m and 5000m at the 2025 MAC Outdoor Track and FIeld Championships in Athens, having placed 4th in the 1500m and powered through a mid-race fall in the 5000m to finish sixth.
The top 12 competitors from each individual event and the top 12 teams from each relay event advance from each first round to compete at the 2025 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore.
