Borgman collects eight saves in first appearance and start; five freshmen made collegiate debut, four in starting lineup
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — Central Michigan Soccer hosted its season-opener for the first time since 2013 Thursday afternoon, fell to Big East contender Butler, 2-0.
Â
Junior Brylee Borgman (Norton Shores, Mich. / Mona Shores) made her first career appearance and start between the posts, stood tall with eight saves. The Bulldogs ran away with the offensive production with 20 shots and eight opportunities from the corner, yet Borgman maintained a clean sheet into the 76th minute.
Â
Six newcomers were listed in the starting eleven, including four freshmen: Jimena Perez Ayala (Monterrey, Mexico / American Foundation), Kylee Weed (Jackson, Mich. / Northwest), Alyssa Di-Campli (Queanbeyan, Australia / St. Clare's) and Abby Freese (Dillsburg, Pa. / Northern).
Â
Freese recorded the lone on-target attempt for CMU via free kick just before Butler's first score, one of two attempts to her credit. The Chippewas' third was logged by Perez Ayala, the goal-scorer in Central Michigan's 1-1 exhibition draw at Detroit Mercy, in the 22nd minute, floating just over the crossbar.
Â
Chippewa Soccer remains in Mount Pleasant to host Loyola Chicago Sunday (1 p.m.) for Youth Day at the CMU Soccer Complex, then hits the road for three straight: Wisconsin (Aug. 21), Cincinnati (Aug. 28), South Dakota (Sept. 7).
