CMU Soccer tallies first point in Mid-American Conference standings in second league contest
MUNCIE, Ind. — Central Michigan Soccer marked its first point in the 2025 Mid-American Conference standings Thursday night in a 1-1 draw at Ball State.
"Really proud of this young team's fight and resilience," Head Coach Jeremy Groves said. "We've been in every game we've played in but have been a little unlucky at times."
Junior, and first-year Chippewa, Melaina Troy (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester) punched in the leveling goal in the 60th minute on her way to four on-target attempts in the match. Sophomore Ella Betzold (Essexville, Mich. / Garber) started the play as she broke away with a loose ball and sent in a strong cross on the 6' as Troy drove through the middle.
"The goal was great for our belief as a team, and I thought we were unlucky to not get another."
Troy's other three on-frame shots came scattered through the contest, with two strong looks in the 23rd and 70th minutes. In addition, Troy was awarded CMU's first penalty attempt since Oct. 23, 2022, but missed just over the crossbar.
"I thought, again, we played well in spells of the game. Overall, we will take the point and move on to next Thursday."
The Chippewas host Toledo next Thursday night (Sept. 25, 7 p.m. ET) with a built-in day off Sunday from conference play, affording time to let progress from Thursday's outing sink in.
Through the first eight matches of the 2025 campaign, Central Michigan has yet to have fewer than four freshmen in the starting lineup as five of the seven-player class took the field at kickoff. Add in that Troy has been a near-every game starter as a first-year transfer and no keeper on the roster had appeared in NCAA I action prior to this season—a lot has had to come together since the season began.
"This young team just needs games to grow. It's difficult when you start five to six freshmen every game. This team has so much potential."
