Rainey Weidman records 15 digs in Ypsilanti to set a new career high in the category.
YPSILANTI, Mich. – Central Michigan's Rainey Weidman has continued to improve defensively for the Chippewas in MAC play. That improvement continued on Saturday evening as she set a new career high in digs at Eastern Michigan. Weidman ended the night with 15, surpassing her previous record of 11 set the match before at Western Michigan.
Eastern Michigan defeated Central Michigan 3-0 Saturday night in Ypsilanti. Offensively, the Chippewas were led by sophomore Taylor Cripe, who tallied 10 kills. Teyhlor Thomas made her return to the court against the Eagles and totaled a team high four blocked. Thomas had not been healthy to compete since September 4th against Illinois State.
How it happened
The two teams remained close throughout the first set. In the first seven points scored by either team, no team had a lead larger than one.
CMU led 11-9 and when the Eagles tied the score, but the Chippewas recovered and went up 13-11. No team still had led by more than two in the set. Eastern Michigan led by one-point at the media break. But in the end, Eastern Michigan pulled away to take the first set, 20-25.
CMU found itself back in another close set in the second, but led by as much as four at 10-6. The Eagles worked back to tie the set at 11-11. The Chippewas trailed 18-22 at one point late in the set, but forced EMU to take a timeout after cutting it to just a one point deficit. After the timeout, CMU evened the score at 22-22, forcing the second Eagle timeout.
The set was tied at 24-24, but Eastern Michigan registered the final two points to claim the win 24-26.
In the third set, Eastern Michigan took a 10-point lead and the Chippewas dropped set three 10-25 and the match.
