CMU falls in MAC-SBC matchup to Old Dominion, 62-58; Summer Davis pours in career-high 24 points
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — "The kids were locked in the whole time."
A youthful Hoops For Hunger crowd, 4,671 strong, was in lockstep with Central Michigan Women's Basketball for its season opener Monday for a back-and-forth MAC-Sun Belt Challenge affair with Old Dominion, soured by the Monarchs, 62-58.
"It was just an awesome atmosphere," Head Coach Kristin Haynie said. "It was super fun, I know our players enjoyed being around it too."
Junior newcomer Summer Davis (Detroit, Mich. / West Bloomfield) took center stage with career highs of 24 points, six steals along with nine rebounds.
"It's not a surprise she did what she did today. She plays hard on both sides of the ball, has a good eye for the ball and gets deflections. It was a good all-around game for her."
Davis was one of six players to make their Chippewa debut against Old Dominion. Her sister, Indya Davis (Detroit, Mich. / West Bloomfield), led the rest of the group with 10 points, nine rebounds and five assists.
The Davis twins, Nevaeh Williams (Mount Clemens, Mich. / Mount Clemens) and Kara Bartels (West Olive, Mich. / Zeeland West) combined for 20 of Central Michigan's 23 offensive rebounds, 34 of 46 total.
"We pride ourselves on rebounding, it's just effort and hustle. They know if they don't rebound, they're not going to play; if we're not rebounding, that means we're not playing hard."
The energy in McGuirk Arena was coupled with a fast start for the Chippewas, up 25-14 less than nine minutes into the contest. Summer Davis posted eight of her 24 points during the run, supported by seven of Riley Smith's (Miamisburg, Ohio / Archbishop Alter) career high-tying 13.
Smith, who missed the back half of her sophomore season due to injury, stepped into her fourth career start for 32 minutes in a pivotal defensive role on top of higher expectations on the offense end.
"It's really nice to see her blossom in her junior year. She's not just a shooter for us anymore. She's confident in putting it on the ground and finishing, and that's just a testament to her work ethic."
The well ran dry for the Chippewas during the first quarter break as CMU tallied as many field goals (10) in the final 30 minutes as it had in the first 10.
"We had a lack of scoring there for the last three quarters, and some of that was shot selection. The good thing about that is it's correctable, and you can get better with that."
After the game, the Chippewas already knew what else needed to be done, Haynie said.
"The players brought up how we didn't take advantage of turnovers and converting points off turnovers."
Central Michigan forced the Monarchs into 24 giveaways through 14 steals, 11 of which were logged between Summer (6) and Indya Davis (2), and Williams (2).
Chippewa Women's Basketball heads to Ohio State for its first nationally ranked opponent of the season Thursday night (Nov. 5, 6:30 p.m. ET on Big Ten Plus).
Last time CMU paid a visit to Columbus: the 2018 NCAA Regional, where the Sue Guevara-led Chippewas took down the 10th-ranked Buckeyes and 24th-ranked LSU en route to the program's lone Sweet Sixteen appearance.
