Kalbacher nearly matches last season’s total in single outing; Chippewas fall, 19-6
MILWAUKEE — Sophomore Caye Kalbacher (Austin, Texas / Stephen F. Austin) recorded her first career multi-goal performance with four goals—and a first-half hat trick—in Central Michigan Lacrosse's visit to Marquette Friday night.
Â
The Chippewas fell, 19-6, though ran stride-for-stride with the Golden Eagles to a 7-5 halftime that lasted almost five minutes into the third quarter.
Â
Central Michigan responded to four-goal deficits twice in the first half to draw back to within a pair. Kalbacher and freshman Mia Bradley (Orchard Park, N.Y. / Orchard Park) each scored following a 5-1 deficit in the first quarter; Kalbacher scored goals two and three after a 7-3 deficit, both assisted by Bradley, marking the rookie's first career marks in both categories and first multi-point game all by intermission.
Â
Kalbacher's performance marked the first four-goal game for a Chippewa since March 30, 2025 against Eastern Michigan, the first by a sophomore since May 6, 2023 at Robert Morris—both previous instances were courtesy of Skye DePrado '25.
Â
Leila Kahler (Spring Lake, Mich. / Spring Lake) recorded her first double-digit performance in saves of the season with 12, one short of the career high set in her first career start.
Â
The senior's production came in key situations as she stopped three of Marquette's six free position opportunities and made a point-blank save late in the second quarter to take possession for CMU and kill nearly 90 seconds of an Eagles power play—which set the stage for Kalbacher's second and third goals.
Â
Julia Werner (Gurnee, Ill. / Warren Township) marked CMU's first goal of the season from the eight-meter less than four minutes into the contest to knot the game up, 1-1.
Â
The Chippewas found success in the draw circle with 11 for the contest and outworked Marquette for a 5-4 advantage after the first frame. Kalbacher retrieved five, a game high, while Ava Regitz (Marietta, Ga. / Blessed Trinity) and Amelia Sarap (Granville, Ohio / Granville) each added a pair.
Â
Central Michigan Lacrosse visits No. 2 Northwestern Sunday (Feb. 15; 4 p.m. ET) on its way back from Milwaukee, the third of seven consecutive road games to open 2026.
Â
The Chippewas open the home, and Mid-American Conference, schedule March 14 against Robert Morris.
