Guikema, Thompson Find Top-10 CMU All-Time at Wake Forrest Invitational, Chippewas Start Strong at Gina Relays

Maya Guikema etches her name in seventh place in Chippewas top-10 800m, Thompson breaks into steeplechase list
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — Central Michigan Track & Field traveled to Wake Forest for the Wake Forest Invitational and Hillsdale College for the Gina Relays Thursday afternoon to kick off a three-day weekend.
Maya Guikema kicked things off strong with a big personal best in the 800m at the Wake Forest Invitational, with a 2:10.82 second finish. The performance puts her seventh all-time of any Central Michigan athlete.
Eva Thompson added to the Chippewas' strong start in the 3000m steeplechase. She logged an 11:00.13 finish in the event, good for the 10th-best in program history.
I'm so proud of everyone that competed today, Central Michigan Director of Track & Field Jenny Swieton said, The Hillsdale women killed it and so did the Wake Forest ladies, it's a great day to be a Chippewa! Everything we've been working for is coming together.
Rounding out the group at Wake Forrest, both Jessie Gibbins and Lois Creasey ran the 800m. Gibbins grabbed a personal best 2:13.05, while Creasey logged 2:14.43. In the 5000m Grace VanderKooi set a personal best 17:18.60 for 11th overall and Kate Jenkins logged 17:37.11 for 17th.
Central Michigan rounded out its day with a late start at the Gina Relays. The day kicked off with the 3000m steeplechase, where Emma Netzel and Nikki Carothers took the line. Netzel took fourth in the event with an 11:25.35 performance, a personal best, while Carothers took fifth with an 11:27.91 showing.
Ava Teed, Logan Brazee and Miranda McNeil rounded out the day for the Chippewas with the Gina Relays 5k; each runner earned a personal best. Teed led with a 17:38.40 finish for fifth place. Brazee took eighth with a 17:56.60, and Miranda McNeil ended the Chippewas' day with an 18:03.60 finish.
Chippewa Track & Field returns Friday afternoon at Wake Forest where members of the distance team will compete and at the Hillsdale Gina Relays. Events at the Gina Relays will continue through Thursday.
