Chippewa Bats Go Quiet in 5-3 Loss at Notre Dame

CMU returns to Theunissen for nonleaguer on Wednesday, the first of nine consecutive home games
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Six Notre Dame pitchers combined to hold Central Michigan to four hits on Tuesday in handing the Chippewas a 5-3 loss in a nonconference baseball game at Frank Eck Stadium.
It was CMU's fourth consecutive loss. The Chippewas (18-24) entertain Grace Christian (23-20) on Wednesday (4 p.m.) in a nonleague game on Keilitz Field at Theunissen Stadium.
Notre Dame (20-20) took a 3-2 lead in the fifth when they scored two runs on three hits. Andrew Graham and Drew Berkland each singled and then Bino Watters tied the game with an RBI single. The Irish got the go-ahead run on a Mark Quatrani sacrifice fly.
Notre Dame tacked on two insurance runs in the sixth on another RBI double and another sacrifice fly.
CMU starter Jake Griffiths (2-2) allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits and struck out four over six innings in taking the loss.
Jake Brown surrendered one hit in two innings of relief. Griffiths and Brown combined to walk three, the lowest number of walks allowed by Chippewa pitching in eight games.
CMU scored twice in the first inning. Cole Prout drew a one-out walk, went to third on a Bowman double, and scored on a groundout. Bowman then scored on a wild pitch.
CMU's other run came in seventh when Bowman singled to lead off the inning. He took second on a groundout and scored on a throwing error.
Chase VanAmeyde, the third Notre Dame pitcher, picked up the victory. Oisin Lee, who worked around a two-out walk in the ninth, picked up the save.
