Chippewa arms carry shutout into eighth inning; Webb leads bats with three-for-four outing
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — Central Michigan Baseball took down Oakland, 6-4, in a second nonleague meeting Tuesday afternoon at Theunissen Stadium.
Â
"Winning builds confidence, no matter how you play or how things go," Head Coach Jake Sabol said. "A win at home, to feel that again was important."
Â
The Chippewas completed a season sweep of the Golden Grizzlies in combination with an 11-6 road victory on April 21.
Â
CMU has four left in its nine-game homestand: a Mid-American Conference weekend series with Akron, followed by the regular season home finale against Valparaiso (May 12; 3 p.m.).
Â
The six-man pitching slate put a solid outing together Tuesday as the group held Oakland off the board until the eighth inning, allowing the bats to stage a 6-0 lead.
Â
Mitchell Tarnowski picked up his first win of the season (1-1) with three shutout innings, four strikeouts to two hits, two walks.
Â
"We think very highly of Mitch. He's going to be really good for us when cleans some stuff up, and today was a glimpse of that."
Â
Bryson Webb led an all-around offensive effort for the Chippewas with a three-for-four day at the plate, an uptick from a recent slump for the everyday third baseman.
Â
"His at-bats have been better; he's grinding it out. He's hit some balls right on the screws right at people for the last several games and hasn't been rewarded for it. When he's on-base and going, it makes our offense that much better."
Â
Webb legged out an infield single to load the bases in the first to keep the inning alive for CMU's first run, a Harrison Bowman RBI walk. A one-out knock into center field jump-started the three-run third inning. A well-executed bunt put Logan Keilen in position for a Joey Milto RBI base hit to left.
Â
Tyson Potts took the mound for a second start in three games to redeem his Saturday effort with two innings of one-hit work and two strikeouts in an arm-preserving 24 pitches. Kenny Keller and Carter Campau carried the shutout through the sixth and seventh innings, combined for just 13 pitches.
Â
Cole Prout and Zach Knowlton each joined Webb in the multi-hit club, each a two-for-four outing. Knowlton scored on both of his appearances on the base paths, sent Webb home for the first run of the third on a RBI single to left field; Prout doubled to score Knowlton in the seventh.
