Catchers offer offensive production, Chippewas hampered by depleted pitching staff
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — Central Michigan Baseball finished the weekend on the wrong end of a Mid-American Conference series sweep Sunday, an 8-2 result to Northern Illinois.
Â
"It's been a tough weekend up until today," Head Coach Jake Sabol said. "What I'm proud of is the amount of guys that came up to me pregame and said, 'hey coach, I'm up if you need it.'"
Â
The Chippewas continue their nine-game homestand Tuesday as Oakland returns, set for a 3 p.m. first pitch. Friday marks the start of the final home league series against Akron.
Â
Spencer Verburg kept up his strong hitting and, together with Logan Keilen, reached base six times in eight plate appearances, recording five hits, one walk and the team's two RBI on Sunday.
Â
"I can't write those two guys into the lineup fast enough right now. No matter where we've hit them, they've been able to produce."
Â
The pair of catchers has traded the designated hitting and catching duties for most of the last 10 games. Sunday marked fifth-year Verburg's second career start at first base while redshirt-freshman Keilen handled the plate.
Â
"Super proud of the Chippewa that Verburg is. A five-year guy that's never really been the guy, waited his turn and has been a great teammate. Having only one day of practice reps at first base, he said, if the team needs it, put me over there, I'll figure it out.'
Â
"This is Logan's first year playing, and he looks like an older guy out there. For him to hit in the middle of the lineup and keep doing what he's doing is really impressive."
Â
A quartet of relievers pitched five innings, allowing just one run after starter Gavin Moczydlowski left in the fourth inning of Sunday's game. Moczydlowski's record dropped to 1-4 with the loss.
Â
Jared Hanson relieved Moczydlowski for two shutout innings, allowing one walk and one hit to lead the pen; Carter Campau finished the contest with the final two outs in two batters faced. Both marked their respective second appearance of the weekend.
Â
"We ran Carter out there twice this weekend; he hadn't seen a weekend opportunity in a while before that. I'm proud of the guys for having the mentality of wanting to go out there and give us what they could."
Â
Hanson and Nate Ross each posted five strong relief innings for the series, though in all three cases the Huskies had already done their damage.
Â
"They understand the importance every single day, and we are down several arms on the mound right now; two more this weekend with a couple of our young guys."
