Webb hits a grand slam, Keilen a 3-run shot in loss

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- The wind giveth and the wind taketh.

Akron out-homered Central Michigan, 3-2, on Saturday in handing the Chippewas a 12-10 loss in game 2 of a Mid-American Conference baseball series on Keilitz Field at Theunissen Stadium.

Four of the five home runs went to left field, aided by a strong Theunissen Stadium tail wind.

The last of those homers, an eighth-inning, three-run shot by Brody Chrisman, put the Zips ahead for good.

Game 3 of the series is scheduled for Sunday (1 p.m.). The Chippewas won the series opener, 3-0, on Friday.

Saturday's loss dropped CMU to 21-28, 10-19 MAC. The Chippewas are four games out of sixth place – with four conference games to play – in the MAC standings. The top six teams make the league tournament.

The Chippewas and Zips combined for 24 hits on Saturday. CMU used six pitchers; Akron used five.

The Chippewas led, 6-2, when Akron struck for seven runs in the seventh inning – highlighted by a Gabe Mathison grand slam -- to seize a 9-6 lead.

CMU came back in the bottom half of the inning as Bryson Webb hit a grand slam to put the Chippewas in front, 10-9.

Logan Keilen hit a three-run homer in the fifth for the Chippewas.

It was Keilen's fifth homer of the season and Webb's sixth. Webb's round-tripper was the Chippewas' fifth grand slam of the season.

Cole Prout and Jonathan Fleaka had three hits apiece to lead CMU's 13-hit attack.

Cameron Neihaus, the fifth CMU pitcher, took the loss. Chippewa starter Tyson Potts allowed two runs on four hits and struck out seven over six innings.
