Fans get their first glimpse of the 2026 Central Michigan football team as the Chippewas host their first fall scrimmage; one more week of preseason drills remain.
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich.—Central Michigan Football completed its first 2026 fall scrimmage Friday evening under the lights at Kramer/Deromedi Field at Kelly/Shorts Stadium.
Friday's scrimmage marked the 14th of 21 fall preseason practices. The 90-minute scrimmage featured nearly 80 offensive snaps.
Central Michigan head coach Matt Drinkall was pleased with Friday's results and through the start of fall ball.
"Today was much more and probably closer to mock game and mock scenarios," Central Michigan head coach Matt Drinkall said. "It was good operationally to get out and see how everyone does as over half of our team is new. It was all very positive. We held out quite a few people. Nobody got over 30 reps today, which was the plan going in. All three of the top quarterbacks got equal reps around 20 each. Other than one player, we made it out healthy."
On offense, Central Michigan's three quarterbacks Angel Flores, Jadyn Glasser, and Marcus Beamon each saw extensive action. All three made impressive plays with clutch passes and had long runs. Flores hit Brock Townsend for a 25-yard touchdown. Glasser threw two touchdown passes to Jordan Stapleton (11 yards) and Trav Moore (14 yards) respectively and ran for a 22-yard gain. Beamon completed a 38-yard pass and ran for another 25 yards. Backup quarterback Ryan Watters had the longest run of the day, a 34-yarder.
On defense, the Chippewas made a variety of plays. The defense started the scrimmage off by forcing back-to-back turnovers. On the first play from scrimmage, linebacker Mayson Hitchens forced a fumble which was recovered by defensive back Darrell Bryant, Jr. On the second play, defensive back Coen Ali dove and intercepted a pass. Other key plays from the defense included tackles for loss from Hitchens and defensive lineman Jaxon Cherry, a pass breakup by defensive back Matthew McKenzie, and sacks by defensive linemen Matthew Plumb and Evan Walker.
CMU's special teams also did some good things. Placekicker Caden VanHuis converted four field goals including kicks of 50 and 41 yards, while punters Declan Duley and Zac Chapeau each had several reps.
On August 5, Central Michigan welcomed 110 players to preseason practice, including 37 newcomers. The Chippewas return 13 players who made starts and a host of others who saw extensive action in 2025.
League coaches picked Central Michigan to finish fifth in the 12-team Mid-American Conference. The Chippewas are picked by preseason publications to finish anywhere between the No. 3 and No. 6 spot in the league standings. Under Matt Drinkall, the Chippewas are coming off a 2025 season which saw them advance to a bowl game for the first time in four years (since 2021), register a 7-6 overall record, including 7-3 vs. non-Power-4 opponents, and finish in fifth place in the MAC with a 5-3 league record.
Central Michigan opens its 2026 football season at New Mexico on Saturday, Sept. 5 at 10 p.m. ET/8 p.m. MT. The Chippewas will play six home games at Kramer/Deromedi Field, including five early-season contests scheduled for September and October. Click here to access the 2026 schedule.
