Yturralde closes with an eagle for an opening-round 2-under 69
HUNTINGTON, W. Va. – All things considered, a good, solid start for the Central Michigan men's golf team.
The Chippewas opened with a 5-over par 289 and followed with a 7-over 291 for a 36-hole 12-over 580 total on Monday at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational at Guyan Golf & Country Club.
The Chippewas, with a lineup that includes three freshmen playing in their first collegiate event, are in 12th place in the 14-team field.
It is the Chippewas' first event of the season.
"We hit the ball very well," CMU coach Kevin Jennings said. "We just couldn't get any putts to fall. In this game, if you're not making putts, it can prove to be a challenge
"Guys were hitting double-digit greens (in regulation); we just couldn't really get the ball to fall on birdie putts. The key is to continue to give yourself opportunities. That's the name of the game … and we're ahead of the game in that regard. We just need to get some of the balls to fall.
"Overall, I think that they did pretty well. Not a lot of huge mistakes and best of all I saw a lot of good attitudes and that is a springboard for a lot of good things."
The final round is scheduled for Tuesday with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
Senior Philippe Yturralde led the Chippewas with an opening-round 2-under 69. He followed with a 2-over 73 and stands at even par 142 and tied for 35th in the 92-player field.
Yturralde played his final four holes in the first round in 3-under par, capped by an eagle on his final hole of the round, the 358-yard par-4 fourth.
CMU's Dimitri Protopapas and Awesome Burnett are tied for 53rd at 4-over 146, Édouard Laflamme (148) is T65, Benjamin Shin (149) is T74, and Edward Beehag (150) is T77.
Protopapas turned in twin 73s; Burnett, playing as an individual, shot 76-70; Laflamme, 72-76; Shin 75-74; and Beehag, 79-71.
Protopapas, Laflamme and Shin are freshmen; Burnett and Beehag are junior transfers playing in their first tournament for CMU.
Four of the six Chippewas improved their respective score from round 1 to round 2, which bodes well, Jennings said, particularly in light of the fact that the Chippewas, as a group, didn't get a number of birdie chances to fall.
"That's a testament to the guys that we brought in, the quality of the guys, because they were able to keep their poise," Jennings said. "One of the most challenging things to do is to remain in a good frame of mind or keep a positive mindset and maintain your poise and not allow the round to get away from you when you're hitting the ball so well that you've got 15, 20 feet (for birdie) all day and you're not really getting anything to fall.
"We didn't have a whole bunch of big blow-up (holes) and I'm looking forward to continuing to help these guys become better players and continue to elevate Chippewa Men's Golf.
"There are a lot of good signs; we maybe didn't play to the level that we really wanted to, but we know that we can tap into more and there are a lot of positives from the day. We just need to maintain what we're doing, on many levels, and from there just get it in the hole."
Murray State (277-276) leads the tournament at 15-under par, four shots ahead of Youngstown State.
Three players -- Ryan Sam of Youngstown State, CJ Scohy of Wright State and Trey Wall of Murray State – share the day 1 lead at 7-under.
