Yturralde Leads Men's Golf With T27 Finish at Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational

HUNTINGTON, W. Va. – Philippe Yturralde closed with an even-par 71 on Tuesday to lead the Central Michigan men's golf team in the final round of the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational at Guyan Golf & Country Club.
Yturralde, a senior, finished with an even-par 213 to finish tied for 27th in the 92-player field. He began the day tied for 35th and moved up eight spots.
The Chippewas shot a 6-over 290 team score on Tuesday to finish the 54-hole event with a 18-over 870. They finished in 12th place in the 14-team field.
Yturralde overcame early-round struggles – he was 3-over through his first seven holes – to make three birdies over his final 11 holes to get back to even.
"This game can be a little challenging when you're presented with the start that you hadn't envisioned for yourself," CMU coach Kevin Jennings said. "What I am most proud of for him is that he didn't have his best stuff in this event, yet he competed very well with old man par and was able to right the ship and he battled his way back, which is indicative of the type of player and the person that he is, someone who does not give up, someone who perseveres through the challenges. And I'm very happy for him, very proud of him.
"But like his coach, he knows that he can do better, and he's itching and raring to go for the next event so that he can prove it."
Outside of Yturralde, the Chippewa lineup comprised student-athletes playing their first event in maroon and gold, including three freshmen.
CMU's Awesome Burnett, playing as an individual, closed with a 2-over 73 for a 6-over 219 total and a tie for 53rd; Benjamin Shin and Dimitri Protopapas finished among a group tied for 61st at 7-over 220; Shine posted a final-round 71, while Protopapas shot 3-over 74; Édouard Laflamme also shot a 3-over 74 to finish at 9-over 222 and a T73 finish; and Edward Beehag posted a 9-over 80 to finish T86 at 17-over 230.
Shin, Protopapas and Laflamme are freshmen, while Burnett and Beehag are juniors who transferred into the program this season.
"There are a lot of good things to take away and what they did in this event, the inaugural event, so to speak, with this new team," said Jennings, who next takes his team to the Ball State Earl Yestingmeier Invitational in Muncie, Ind., on Sept. 26-27. "If you look at a lot of the guys' scores today, they collectively and individually made a lot of pars and that in and of itself is a wonderful thing and great to carry forward in all events that we're going to be playing in.
"We'll look at that and go back to the drawing board and see what works and what doesn't and get ready to go to the next event."
Bellarmine closed with a 5-under 279 for a 13-under 839 and a one-shot victory over Purdue Fort Wayne.
Remy Stalcup of Morehead State shot a final-round 4-under 67 to finish at 10-under 203 and a two-shot victory over Bellarmine's Ben Wulkopf and Marshall's Jackson Harrison.
