Betzold, Weed find the back of the net against the tough defense of the Badgers; Chippewas host nationally ranked team for second time in program history

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — "They're No. 16 in the country for a reason."

Central Michigan Soccer fell, 6-2, to 16^th-ranked Wisconsin Sunday afternoon, just the second time a national top-25 unit has made a trip to the CMU Soccer Complex (No. 24 Michigan, 2022).

"We discovered some things, tried some things, and found more options than we thought we had," Head Coach James DeCosemo said. "I still think we're further along than I thought we would be."

The Chippewas conclude their non-conference schedule next Sunday (Sept. 13, 1 p.m. ET) at Butler before returning home to open Mid-American Conference play against Buffalo (Sept. 17, 7 p.m. ET).

CMU found the back of the net from a set piece for the third consecutive match as Kylee Weed (Jackson, Mich. / Northwest) chested in a rebound of her own attempt off the post in the 24^th minute.

"[Set pieces] will be the difference between a lot of games this year. We're getting much better at taking them and much more effective at attacking."

Weed had checked into the match less than 90 seconds before her goal, less than a minute before the foul that set up the play.

Ella Betzold (Essexville, Mich. / Garber) collected her team-high third goal of the season in the 68^th minute and marked Weed as the third different Chippewa with a three-point outing through six matches.

Ella Dykstra (St. Joseph, Mich. / Saint Joseph) played a pivotal role in both goals of the contest from a more unfamiliar role.

"We dropped [Dykstra] back to the midfield. She doesn't get to be as flashy or get close to the goal in there, but she worked so hard and created some good moments."

Weed's cross to Betzold was staged comfortably with a direct-line feed from the middle for Dykstra's second assist of the weekend. The junior offered a decisive header flick to the 6' for Weed ahead of CMU's first score, though assists were nullified by the first attempt off the post.
