Kyle Schroeder has served as an assistant coach on Jordan Bischel’s Central Michigan baseball staff since Bischel took over the program in June, 2018.
Schroeder has played a major role in helping lead CMU to four Mid-American Conference championships -- two regular season and two tournament -- and three NCAA Tournament berths in that span.
Over the past four seasons, the Chippewas have amassed a 143-57 won-loss record for a .715 win percentage that ranks fifth in the nation behind only Vanderbilt, Tennessee, UC Santa Barbara and Arkansas.
In 2022, the Chippewas finished 43-19 including 30-7 and in second place in the MAC. They made an impressive run to the league tournament crown, starting 1-1 and then winning three consecutive elimination games, the final two against host and regular season champion Ball State.
Schroeder helped the Chippewas to a 47-14 mark in 2019, an 11-6 finish during the COVID-shortened 2020 season, and a 42-18 ledger in 2021.
The 47-14 mark (.770 win percentage) in ’19 was the fifth best in the nation and the victory total tied the 1988 team for the most in program history. Included in the win total was a monumental 19-game win streak.
With Schroeder on the coaching staff, the Chippewas have compiled an 83-21 MAC record and have posted three consecutive 40-win full seasons for the first time since 1986-88. They won a combined 132 games in 2019, ’21 and ’22, marking the winningest three-year stretch in program history.
CMU is a combined 25-4 against the five other Michigan Division I programs, Michigan, Michigan State, Eastern Michigan, Western Michigan and Oakland, since 2019.
In that span, the Chippewas have posted 10 victories over opponents from Power 5 conferences: Miami (Fla.), Michigan, Michigan State, Arizona, Notre Dame, West Virginia and Pitt.
Schroeder previously served under Bischel for four years at NCAA Division II Northwood University, where they, along with current CMU assistant Tony Jandron, combined to lead the program to unprecedented success, capped back-to-back Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament championships in 2017-18.
Eleven times during Schroeder’s time on Bischel’s staffs at CMU and at Northwood has a student-athlete gone on to affiliated professional baseball, including Chippewas Andrew Taylor (Astros), Jakob Marsee (Padres), Mario Camilletti (White Sox), Zach Kohn (Yankees), Zavier Warren (Brewers), Griffin Lockwood-Powell (Dodgers), and Ian Leatherman (Rays).
Prior to his four years at Northwood, Schroeder served as an assistant under Bischel when Bischel was the head coach at Midland (Nebraska) University in 2013-14. Together, they led Midland to a league championship and an appearance in the NAIA National Tournament.
Schroeder began his coaching career as an assistant in 2008 at Luther (Iowa) College, worked as a graduate assistant at Northwest Missouri State, and served as an assistant with the Green Bay Bullfrogs of the of the Northwoods League, which is recognized as one of the nation’s top summer leagues for college players.
As a player at Luther from 2004-07, Schroeder led the Norse to Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament championships during his senior year, when he was named the IIAC Most Valuable Player. He remains the program leader in several offensive categories, including career home runs (30) and career RBI (172).
Schroeder earned a bachelor’s degree from Luther and a master’s from Northwest Missouri State.
