David Rowe is in his third season as Central Michigan’s secondary coach. In 2020, he led a unit that made eight interceptions, ranking second in the Mid-American Conference in that category.
Among Rowe’s protégés is safety Willie Reid, who made a league-high three picks in 2020.
Reid earned First Team All-MAC honors while fellow safety Devonni Reed was named to the second team. Both Reed and Reid along with cornerback Dishon McNary were also honored by Pro Football Focus and by Phil Steele.
In 2019, Rowe oversaw a secondary that recorded 12 interceptions as CMU made a remarkable turnaround, finishing 8-6 after winning just one game in the previous season. The 2019 Chippewas won the Md-American Conference West Division title, made its first MAC Championships game appearance in a decade, and earned a berth in the New Mexico Bowl.
Before coming to CMU, Rowe served as the defensive backs coach at Valdosta State, helping the Blazers to a 14-0 record, the NCAA Division II National Championship, and the Gulf South Conference title in 2018. Rowe’s group ranked eighth in the nation in passes intercepted and ninth in red zone defense.
Rowe was a three-year starter at cornerback and safety for Rutgers from 2008-11. He earned a bachelor’s degree with a major in communications from Rutgers in 2012.
A Florida native, Rowe joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers by way of the Bill Walsh Minority Internship program in 2013. The four-month internship led to a defensive coaching assistantship.
Rowe has also served as a graduate assistant at Western Michigan and as the defensive coordinator at Rockledge (Fla.) High School.
