Steve Smith joined coach Tony Barbee’s Central Michigan men’s basketball coaching staff as the director of basketball operations in August, 2022.
As part of his many duties, Smith oversees the program’s internal operations, including travel, and acts as a liaison between the coaching and senior athletic department administrations, program supporters and the community in general.
Prior to arriving at Central Michigan, Smith served as the executive director of men’s basketball under Barbee at Auburn from 2010-15 where, among other duties, he oversaw the program’s operating budget and directed fund raising efforts. Smith worked in a similar capacity at Memphis under John Calipari from 2000-05.
The relationship between Smith and Barbee dates to when the latter played at the University of Massachusetts from 1989-93.
Smith has a background in both business and the sports world. During his athletic administration career, he has worked in various roles with the New Jersey Nets, Atlanta Braves, and Enterprise Sports Radio Network.
A native of Boston, Mass., Smith earned a bachelor's degree in sports management from Massachusetts in 1981.
He has two daughters, Nichole and Stefanie.
