One of only a handful of 13-time lettermen in CMU history, Kelly entered the Hall of Fame for his 16-year career (1951-66) as football and tennis coach of the Chippewas... Kelly/Shorts Stadium is named for him... led his team to seven Interstate Intercollegiate Athletic Conference titles in football and two in tennis... ended his career as the winningest coach in CMU's gridiron history (91-58-2)... his 1956 team was a perfect 9-0... as an athlete, he earned four letters in football, basketball and tennis, and one in baseball, competing from 1926-30... also served as editor of the student newspaper, president of the senior class and a class officer all four years... received a Hall of Fame award from the Detroit Free Press in 1956 and was inducted into the Michigan High School Hall of Fame in 1983 for his outstanding prep coaching efforts at Cass City, Mount Pleasant and Saginaw.
