When thinking of a 6-4, 270-pound Division I offensive lineman, the word "friendly" may not be the first adjective that comes to mind. This might be true on the field, but around campus, James Alexander would like you to know that he's easy going ... really.
"I'm extremely open-minded," explained Alexander. "I'm a funny person. I'm just one of those people that can have a conversation with just about anyone. I'm really down to earth."
The relaxed attitude of the Detroit native will be a bonus as he begins to venture into the working world. James has big plans for his major in broadcast and cinematic arts and minor in entrepreneurship. By the end of this year, you might just see a new clothing line ... and you will have Alexander to thank.
"I'm starting a clothing line called Empire Jean Company," he explained. "Right now it's just t-shirts, and eventually jeans and someday even suits. The line will include men's and women's clothes."
So what is number 72's inspiration for Empire Jean Company?
"I like a lot of styles," he explained. "I like colors and comfort and the material of the clothes in terms of making them comfortable. I think I have some pretty unique ideas as far as clothing is concerned."
The big screen also holds opportunities for Alexander. You won't see him in front of the camera, but you will see his name in the credits under the title "Executive Producer."
"I want to be a TV news producer because I love being in charge and producing and making things come together," he said. "I also want to produce movies. Action movies ... but a few comedies, too. I'd really like to work with Steven Spielberg."
With such a diversified field of interests, one wonders how the offensive tackle fell in love with football, too.
"I met Lomas Brown when I was in elementary school. He had just been drafted by the Lions and he came to visit my elementary school," he reminisced. "The thing that turned me onto football was putting on his helmet and shoulder pads. They were too big, but putting on that Detroit Lions helmet made me want to play football. After that I started playing little league."
James Alexander has a lot to look forward to upon graduation. In the next few months he is spending time reflecting on the people and places that have influenced him the most.
"My parents taught me to live life to its fullest and to always keep God in your life," he said. "I have so many people I have to thank because so many people have contributed to me. Central not only gave me the opportunity to play Division I football but to get a degree and make myself a better person. I owe a lot to this program."
