Gymnastics Defeats Kent

MOUNT PLEASANT - The Central Michigan University gymnastics team (8-5 overall, 3-0 Mid-American Conference) defeated Kent State University, 194.350-193.850, on Sunday afternoon in Rose Arena.
The win helps the Chippewas remain undefeated in conference action. CMU has also posted wins over Northern Illinois and Bowling Green this season.
Sophomore Bethany Couturier led the Chippewas with a first-place finish in the all-around with a school-record mark of 39.425. Her mark bettered the old record of 39.350 shared by Couturier and Selina Nickason. Couturier also took top honors in the bars with a 9.875 and the balance beam with a career-best 9.90. She also finished second on the bault with a career-best 9.80 and tied for third place on the floor exercise with a 9.850.
Freshman Tammy Verrinder won the vault with a 9.875. She also tied for fourth on the bars with a season-best 9.775 and tied for fifth on the floor exercise with a season-high 9.825.
Kent was led by Heather Langham who won the floor exercise with a 9.90.
Key to the Chippewas' win was their performances on the vault and bars. CMU outscored Kent on the vault, 48.825-48.125, and the bars, 48.900-48.325.
The Chippewas compete at Eastern Michigan on Feb. 19 at 4 p.m.
