LAS VEGAS, NEV.-- The Central Michigan University softball team (1-4, 0-0 Mid-American) picked up its first win of the season on Sunday with a 1-0 victory over Loyola Marymount.
CMU's three captains keyed the win. Senior Tina Kinney (Glendale, CA) fired the one-hit shutout leading CMU to the win. Kinney also scored the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning when fellow senior Nicole Weston (Grand Ledge) singled her in to break the scoreless tie.
Hits were a rarity in the game with CMU producing only three. LMU committed three errors in the game and the lone run was an unearned one.
Kinney went the distance to pick up her first win. She struck out nine Lion batters.
Junior captain Hope Robertshaw (LaCrescenta, CA) joined the other two senior captains (Kinney and Weston) in picking up CMU's hits. They were all singles.
The Chippewas will take time off before heading off to California for the annual spring trip March 5-12. The Chippewas will play several games out West before finishing the week-long junket by playing in the National Invitational Softball Tournament hosted by San Jose State.
