5/6/2026 10:56:00 PM | Softball
The Chippewa Softball team defeated Miami (OH) in the consolation game of the first day of the MAC Tournament ending the five-year dynasty of the RedHawks.
AKRON, Ohio — Central Michigan Softball lived to see another day in the 2026 Mid-American Conference Tournament defeating #3 Miami (OH) in the evening game, 7-3. CMU fell to Ohio in the first game #4 Ohio 9-3 in the first game of the day.
The Chippewas scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to secure the win behind Brooklyn Comapu, who went the distance in the circle.
Cierra Laska hit a two-RBI double in the top of the fourth inning that tied the game at two after Miami (OH) scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning via home run.
Laska plated Emma Lotus and London Williams with the ball in play. Williams led the inning off with a walk and Emma Lotus reached via single up the middle.
Williams then gave the Chippewas the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning with a solo home run. The round tripper was William's eighth of the 2026 season.
After the first inning, Compau and the defense then worked four consecutive scoreless innings for the RedHawks. Miami (OH) posted their final run in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game at three. The run came via sacrifice fly, that Tori Briggs made a standout sliding catch on. Briggs entered at the start of that inning as a defensive substitution.
The seventh inning is where the Chippewas locked in and gave Compau insurance runs – that she ended up not needing.
Laska started the inning with a walk and was then moved over by Briggs when she singled through the right side. Petrovitch laid down a sacrifice bunt that moved the runners into scoring position. After that sacrifice bunt, Ashley Bila, who started the game in right field, re-entered for Briggs.
Jenna Kuzara came to the plate, batting in the two-spot for CMU, laid down a bunt, that was attempted to be a sacrifice bunt, but Kuzara remained on base due to a throwing error by the RedHawk second baseman. On that bunt, Laska scored; 4-3 Chippewas with one out; but the scoring did not stop there. In a first and third situation, Kuzara stole second base, and baited a throw from the RedHawk catcher that allowed Bila to score and give CMU a 5-3 lead.
Alexa Carter then singled to score Kuzara, and the Chippewas led by three.
Another bunt attempt for the Chippewas, from Grace Koenig, and another error by the RedHawk second baseman, got runners on first and second for CMU, still with one out and now a three-run lead.
Ella Luegge, who entered as a pinch runner for Carter, scored from second base on an RBI single from Williams and scored the fourth run of the inning for Central Michigan. CMU sent Compau back to the circle with a four-run cushion.
Comapu issued a fly ball, a ground ball, and struck out the final batter of the game to throw her fourth complete game of the season. The junior ended the game with four strikeouts and just one walk issued.
In the first game, the Chippewas took an early two-run lead in the game against the Bobcats after Angela Petrovitch led the game off with a triple and a two-run home run from Alexa Carter. Both Carter and Petrovitch earned Second Team All-MAC honors on Wednesday morning.
CMU scored its final run of the game in the third inning with an RBI single from Grace Koenig.
Ohio scored their runs in the bottom of the third inning via RBI walk and a grand slam. The final run came in the bottom of the fifth inning with a solo home run.
