WEST LAFAYETTE, IN - Purdue University (3-0 overall, Big Ten) showcased its explosive offense in its 58-16 win over Central Michigan University (1-2 overall, 0-0 Mid-American Conference) on Saturday afternoon at Ross-Ade Stadium.
The Chippewas opened the game by stopping Purdue on third and goal to force the Boilermakers to kick a field goal to take the early 3-0 lead. However, Purdue's Vinny Sutherland got the Boilermakers into the end zone with a 64-yard punt return to give the hosts the 10-0 lead. Kicker Paul Savich (St. Clair Shores/Fr.) got CMU on the scoreboard with a 38-yard field goal to make it 10-3. It would be as close as CMU would get as Purdue's offense kicked into high gear scoring 31 unanswered points to take a commanding 41-3 lead. Purdue's defense also got into the scoring act when Jason Loerzel returned an interception 21 yards for a TD.
CMU got into the end zone with back-to-back scores late in the second quarter. Freshman Jammarl O'Neal (Riviera Beach, FL/Fr.) caught a 60-yard TD pass from Pete Shepherd (Mount Pleasant/Jr.) and sophomore Tedardo France (New Haven) returned a fumble 41 yards for the score to make it 41-16 (the PAT failed on the France score).
CMU couldn't get anything going in the second half while the Boilers scored 10 points in the third quarter and a touchdown in the fourth to give them the 58-16 victory.
Purdue's Heisman Trophy candidate quarterback Drew Brees threw two touchdowns while Sutherland scored a pair of touchdowns for the undefeated Boilermakers.
The Chippewas return home next Saturday to open league play against Miami University at 1 p.m.
