Mount Pleasant, Mich. - How do you replace the two top receivers in school history?
Central Michigan University head football coach Dick Flynn was faced with that situation this season after the graduation of the two most prolific pass catchers in Chippewa annals -- Reggie Allen (now with the Buffalo Bills) and Bryan Schorman.
"We lost two of the best receivers in CMU history and they are awfully hard to replace," Flynn said. "We will have to do it with young, inexperienced players."
Redshirt freshman Jammarl O'Neal (Riviera Beach, Fla.) is one of the youngsters who is now a starter at split end while fifth-year senior Rory Nevins (Charlotte), who is the only wide receiver with a reception in 1998 (one for five yards) listed No. 1 at swingback.
"Rory gives us some experience in the receiving corps and Jammarl has worked his way into the lineup with a great fall," Flynn said.
Junior David Hannah (Clinton Township/Clintondale), despite missing last season with a leg injury and sitting out some drills this fall with hamstring woes, is counted on at split end. Junior Shelton Lewis (Houston, Tex.) is a transfer from West Hills CC and has worked his way into the backup role at swingback.
"David should get right back into the mix and as the rest of the young players pick up the system, I think weUll be okay," Flynn said.
The Chippewas open the 1999 season at home on Thursday, Sept. 2, when Eastern Illinois University comes to Kelly/Shorts Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
