SUNNYVALE, CA--The Central Michigan University softball team (3-4 overall) posted a 1-0 win over Baylor in its first game in the National Invitational Softball Tournament on Friday afternoon.
The win is not only CMU's third straight but it gives head coach Margo Jonker the 700th win of her illustrious career. She has a 700-384-5 record in 21 seasons at the helm of the Chippewa program.
The Chippewas scored the only run of the game when senior Nicole Weston led off the fourth inning with a home run.
Baylor threatened in the bottom of the seventh inning. With two outs the Bears loaded the bases with two straight walks and a hit batter. Baylor then sent the runner at third when Chippewa pitcher Tina Kinney threw a wild pitch. Catcher Lindsay Horvath fielded the ball and Kinney put the tag on the runner at the plate to end the game.
Kinney posted her third straight shutout win. She gave up just two hits and struck out two. Kinney had a no hitter after 5 1/3 innings before she gave up back-to-back hits in the sixth.
The Chippewas wrap up play on Friday by taking on Virginia at 4 p.m., and Pacific at 6 p.m. (PST).
