Softball Posts Doubleheader Sweep Over Ball State

MUNCIE, IN--The Central Michigan University softball team (11-5 overall, 3-0 Mid-American Conference) completed the weekend sweep of Ball State University (9-16 overall, 0-3 Mid-American Conference) with a pair of wins in Saturday's doubleheader at the BSU Softball Complex.
The Chippewas won the opening game, 5-0, and the nightcap, 5-0. With the wins the Chippewas have now won 11 of their last 12 games.
Tina Kinney (Glendale, CA/Sr.) posted her firth shutout on the year with the win in the opening game. She gave up just three hits and struck out five in raising her record to 7-2. The win was the 60th of Kinney's career which ties her with Karen Wongstrom (1984-87) for the top spot on CMU's career wins list.
The Chippewas scored two runs in the first inning on an RBI single by Kinney and an RBI double by Wendy Stephens (Mira Loma, CA/So.). CMU also added a run in the second on an RBI single by Becky Manson (Rockford/So.) and extended the lead to 5-0 with a pair in the fifth on an RBI double by Kim Burke (Mount Pleasant/Jr.) and an RBI single by Kinney.
Manson and Kinney led the CMU offense. Kinney helped her own cause by going two-for-four with two RBIs while Manson hit three-for-four with a double and an RBI. Manson also made several strong defensive plays at the shortstop position.
Stephens picked up the win in the second game to improve her record to 4-2. She gave up five hits and struck out three.
CMU jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single by Kinney. The Chippewas took a 4-0 lead with three more runs in the fourh inning. Michelle Brander (Jenison/Fr.) hit a two RBI double and Burke had an RBI single. Jennifer Skuta (Pinconning/So.) rounded out the scoring with a home run in the sixth inning.
The Chippewas return to action on April 4 when they travel to Detroit.
