MOUNT PLEASANT -- Central Michigan football coach Mike DeBord doesn't have a starting lineup in mind but he is pleased with the effort he has seen so far.
The team wrapped up its last full week of practice with its final scrimmage of the spring season on Saturday at Kelly/Shorts Stadium. With two more practices left, some starting jobs are still open.
"We've talked about how guys are doing," DeBord said. "Some of the athletes are further ahead than others so they're in the first group but the lines haven't been set yet."
With the spring season winding down, DeBord has noticed some standout performances.
"Our defensive line has progressed well this spring," DeBord said. "It's not where it has to be but it's progressing well. Our secondary is playing well, also. On offense, Vince Webber has put forth a good effort at tailback and D.J. McClure has had a great spring at fullback."
Overall, DeBord has been happy with what he's seen from the football team.
"Our effort has been tremendous this spring," DeBord said. "It has been physical and with no complaints from the players. We did sustain a few bumps and bruises in the process but we don't have any injuries that will hamper us come fall."
With spring practice coming to a close, DeBord is now looking to the seniors to lead the team into fall.
"In the summer, the coaches can't control practice," DeBord said. "Now is the time for the seniors to step-in and lead this team into the fall. It's up to the them to help build this team when spring practice is over."
The team has practices set for Monday and Wednesday before the close of the spring season.
