MOUNT PLEASANT - New Central Michigan University football coach Mike DeBord, a whirlwind of energy on the practice field, likes the enthusiasm and drive of his football team shown thus far in spring drills.
The Chippewas held their first scrimmage of the spring on Saturday, April 1, in Kelly/Shorts Stadium, marking the fifth of 15 practice sessions allowed by NCAA rules.
"We're making strides," DeBord said. "We wanted to keep it basic the first week and get a chance to take a long look at everyone. I've been impressed with the way this team has come to practice each day."
CMU has practices set for Monday, Wednesday and Friday this week with another scrimmage set for Saturday at 1:30 p.m. Spring drills are set to conclude on Wednesday, April 19.
The Chippewas began the spring without a depth chart but DeBord indicated that would change.
"We'll start putting guys on the first and second team this week," DeBord said. "And, we'll also start putting in a lot more of our offense and defense."
The intensity level at CMU's practice has definitely risen under DeBord.
"There's pressure involved with everything in football and I'm going to be the pressure on the football field," he said. "You can't give into it. You have to fight through it."
