Softball Takes Pair From Detroit

DETROIT--The Central Michigan University softball team belted out 29 hits and 15 runs in a doubleheader sweep of the Detroit Titans on Monday afternoon at Titan Field.
The Chippewas won the opening game by an 8-2 count and claimed the nightcap, 7-2. CMU improves to 27-11 overall while Detroit is 14-27.
Tina Kinney (Glendale, CA/Sr.) led the Chippewas on the mound and at the plate in the opening game.
Kinney not only picked up the win in relief, she also tied a school record with four hits in the game. She hit four-for-four with four RBI including a three-run home run in the seventh inning.
CMU got on the scoreboard first with a run in the top of the first but Detroit responded with one run in the first and one in the second to take the early 2-1 lead.
The Chippewas then scored seven unanswered runs with one in both the fourth and fifth innings and five in the seventh. The big blow in the seventh was the three-run shot by Kinney.
Kinney improved her record to 18-6 on the year with the victory. She pitched 4 1/3 innings of hitless ball. Kinney also struck out seven to give her 479 career strikeouts, just seven away from tying the school record.
Jenni Rasmussen (Saginaw/Fr.) started the game and pitched the first 2 2/3 innings before giving way to Kinney. Rasmussen gave up six hits and two runs.
Kinney led the Chippewas' 16-hit attack with her four-for-four hitting performance. Becky Manson (Rockford/So.) hit two-for-five with one RBI while Jen Skuta (Pinconning/So.) went two-for-four with one RBI.
The nightcap featured more of CMU's hard-hitting offense. CMU followed up its 16-hit performance in the opening game with 13 in the second game.
The Chippewas scored single runs in the second, third and fifth innings before putting up four runs in the sixth. Detroit scored single runs in the third and fourth innings.
Kinney smashed her second home run on the day with a solo homer in the sixth inning while Nicole Weston (Grand Ledge/Sr.) added a two-run homer in the sixth.
Wendy Stephens (Mira Loma, CA/So.) picked the win in relief to raise her record to 8-4 on the year. She pitched the final four innings and gave up five hits and one run while striking out two. Rasmussen also started the second game and pitched the first three innings, giving up three hits and one run.
Kim Burke (Mount Pleasant/Jr.) and Kinney led the Chippewa offense. Burke hit three-for-three with a double and an RBI while Kinney went two-for-three with a home run and two RBI.
Next up for CMU is the Mid-American Conference tournament on May 11-13 at Northern Illinois University. The Chippewas open up against Ball State on Thursday at 10 a.m. (CDT).
