MOUNT PLEASANT - Central Michigan University head coach Mike DeBord couldn't be happier with the condition of his 2000 Chippewa football team.
"This football team reported in great shape," said DeBord. "It's obvious that this team made a commitment over the summer to conditioning, strength and running.
"Because of it, we'll be able to start right off working on football and getting prepared for the 2000 seasons instead of spending time on conditioning."
An indication of this dedication was that more than 60 returnees spent the summer in Mount Pleasant to prepare for the 2000 season.
"It's a tremendous sacrifice on their part," DeBord said. "They're away from their family and jobs that they may have had in the past.
"It's actually becoming common at most schools for their kids to spend the summers on campus. You have to do it to compete."
The Chippewas open the season at Purdue on Saturday, Sept. 2, before opening the home season on Saturday, Sept. 9, against Akron at 1 p.m.
