MOUNT PLEASANT - On paper, one of the toughest positions to fill for the 2000 Central Michigan University football team is at tight end.
Starter Mark Swetz, the Chippewas' second-leading receiver last season with 30 grabs for 407 yards, has graduated.
The three returnees have one career catch among them. However, new CMU head coach Mike DeBord feels good about the abilities of 6-3, 245-pound senior Eric Salani (Hancock), 6-4, 250-pound sophomore David Watson (Detroit/Renaissance) and 6-3, 230-pound redshirt freshman Adam Supianoski (Manistee).
Salani saw considerable action in 1999 and caught one pass for six yards. The other two have yet to play. "Eric is a great athlete who runs excellent routes and can catch the ball," DeBord said. "He needs to work hard on his blocking."
Watson is a former walk-on who earned a scholarship. "David has gotten a lot stronger and he's an excellent blocker who needs to work on his receiving," DeBord said.
Supianoski, who also played fullback, will work solely at tight end. "He lacks only experience," DeBord said. "He's a good receiver and we need to get him more reps."
