MOUNT PLEASANT - New Central Michigan University head coach Mike DeBord couldn't be happier with what he's seen out of his 22 newcomers this fall.
"It's a great class," DeBord said. "The character of the class and their football skills are tremendous."
DeBord would prefer redshirting the freshmen but figures at least three of the newcomers will see action.
Sophomore Tyrone Dalton, who sat out all of last year because of NCAA requirements, should play at tailback. He's a 5-10, 200-pounder from Pottstown, Pa., who went to Valley Forge Military.
Two freshmen who should play are 5-9, 175-pound wide receiver Steve Messam (South Bay, Fla./Glades Central) and 6-2, 205-pound outside linebacker Ed Hillery (Rochester Hills/Rochester).
Other yearlings who might play include: fullback Terrence Jackson (Somerset, N.J./Franklin), 6-4, 205-pound outside linebacker Joe Ballard (Chesaning) and 6-5, 240-pound defensive end Matt Wohlgemuth (Lake Orion).
The Chippewas launch the 2000 season this Saturday, Sept. 2, at Purdue. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. (EDT). CMU then hosts Akron on Sept. 9 at 1 p.m.
